Sickle Cell & Young Stroke Survivors (SCYSS) is a registered charity, that holistically supports children, young people and their families affected by sickle cell anaemia and childhood stroke. It started as a support group in June 2005 but as the need grew, in September 2007, it became a registered charity. Many people do not know that Sickle Cell can cause a stroke in children as young as 2 and up to the age of 16 years old. Most times it leaves children with long term disabilities in addition to their Sickle cell. It affects the whole families as extra hospital appointments and therapies are needed. Many parents/carers find themselves having to make extra sacrifices to ensure their child has a better quality of life.
