Winter health and safety tips for children with sickle cell anemia
source: Sickle Cell Foundation of Georgia

summary/abstract:The wind is building, there’s even been some snow. Winter is on its way!
During the next several months, temperatures drop below freezing and snow will begin to fall. The hematology staff at the American Family Children’s Hospital would like to remind families to take special precaution during the winter months to keep a child with sickle cell anemia healthy.
Cold temperatures, high winds and exposure to sick contacts can all put your child at risk for a sickle cell pain crisis or infection. Please remember – children with sickle cell anemia should stay indoors when the temperature falls below 32 degrees Fahrenheit.
Avoid standing out at the bus stop for long periods of time in very cold weather.
