Our haemoglobinopathies service sees children with sickle cell disease, thalassaemia and other disorders of the haemoglobin – the substance in our blood that carries oxygen around the body. The service is run with the South Thames Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia Network and King’s College Hospital. We work closely with colleagues in adult haematology and in the community, based at the South East London Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia Centre, Kennington. The centre provides a range of specialist services including full transcranial doppler scanning (TCD), a test that uses ultrasound to measure how fast the blood flows through the blood vessels within the brain, for children aged 2-16 years. We also have a stroke prevention blood transfusion programme for children.
