The Sickle Cell Program at UI Health is the largest in the Midwest, providing individualized care for pediatric, transitional, and adult patients. Patients in the Sickle Cell Program have access to a number of supportive services, including: Counseling, Education and Outreach, Support Groups — pediatric and adult, National research studies.
For more than 50 years, UI Health has been a pioneer in sickle cell research and treatment. Our mission is to improve the quality of life for individuals with sickle cell and reduce the prevalence and mortality of the disease.
Today, UI Health has cured 25 patients of sickle cell disease through bone marrow transplantation — 20 from matched sibling donors, 5 with half-matched relative donors — and without the need for preparative chemotherapy.
