The vision of Sickle Cell Disease Association of America – Michigan Chapter, Inc. began in August of 1971 at Kirwood Hospital when Dr. Charles F. Whitten founded the Sickle Cell Detection and Information Program. They completed purchase of our office building in 1990. The building contains 14 offices, a laboratory, and separate rooms for meetings and education. There is also ample outside space for client activities. Nationally, they are one of the only community based agencies responsible for a state wide sickle cell program.
Their Mission is:
-To maximize the life potential of individuals living with sickle cell disease
-To enable individuals with sickle cell trait to make informed decisions with respect to family planning
-To provide education and testing for the general public
