source: Sickle Cell Society
summary/abstract:What is a Priapism?
Priapism is an uncomfortable, unwanted erection of the penis which doesn’t go away and is not associated with sexual desire or stimulation. It can frequently be painful and distressing.
The majority of males with sickle cell anaemia (HbSS) are likely to experience a priapism in their life time.
However, Priapism is less common in males with sickle cell disease (HbSC+) and sickle beta thalassaemia (HbSB+).
