Contact Your Senators in Support of Sickle Cell Disease Legislation

Legislation to help improve outcomes for patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) has successfully passed out of the House of Representatives and companion legislation has been introduced in the Senate.

The Sickle Cell Disease Surveillance, Prevention, and Treatment Act of 2018 (S. 2465) – introduced by Senators Tim Scott (R-SC) and Cory Booker (D-NJ) – aims to improve understanding of health care system utilization patterns of people with SCD and establish cost-effective practices to improve and extend the lives of patients.  Specifically, the legislation reauthorizes SCD prevention and treatment grants awarded by the Health Resources and Service Administration (HRSA) and authorizes the federal government, via the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), to award SCD data collection grants to states, academic institutions, and non-profit organizations with the goal of better understanding the prevalence and distribution of SCD and its associated health outcomes and complications.
